Enhancing Pediatric Emergency Care: ETAT+ Training for Health Workers

April 3, 2025 | By Tatumwa Benjamin

In partnership with the Pediatric Health Initiative and Jinja Regional Referral Hospital, BHF is conducting Emergency Triage, Assessment, and Treatment Plus (ETAT+) training sessions at Iganga General Hospital and Kamuli General Hospital. These trainings are specifically designed for healthcare workers responsible for managing severely ill children, equipping them with essential skills to improve pediatric emergency care.

Dr. Anne Amate Medical Superintendent and Dr. Rolland Mutumba (Lt), a pediatrician, delivers the opening remarks at the ETAT+ training at Iganga Genaral Hospital

ETAT+ is a structured approach recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) to ensure that critically ill children receive immediate, life-saving interventions upon arrival at a healthcare facility. It focuses on triage, rapid assessment, and emergency treatment, ensuring that children with life-threatening conditions are prioritized and managed effectively.

By implementing ETAT+ principles, health workers can make quick and informed decisions that significantly improve survival rates, especially in resource-limited settings.

This training is part of our Child Thrive Project, an initiative aimed at improving the quality of pediatric care through better medical management and enhanced patient involvement. Beyond clinical skills, the training also emphasizes the importance of family-centered care, ensuring that parents and caregivers are engaged in the treatment process, leading to improved satisfaction and adherence to medical recommendations.

The project is funded by the Swedish International Centre for Local Democracy (ICLD)
