The Busoga Malaria Eradication Program (BMEP) Nawanyingi pilot, coordinated by Busoga Health Forum with government and community partners, tested an integrated, community-led approach to malaria elimination in Iganga District. The programme combined community mobilisation, household and school mapping, indoor and outdoor residual spraying, mass testing and treatment, and continuous surveillance. The pilot covered 6,955 households and 19 schools, with 35,600 people enumerated and 25,533 tested. Among those tested, 8,342 were malaria-positive and 8,294 received treatment, achieving 99% treatment coverage. Malaria positivity at Bunyiiro Health Centre III declined from 90.3% to 9.7%, while Anopheles mosquito density fell by 88.7%. Strong community ownership supported implementation, including youth volunteers, local leaders, teachers, health workers and the Nawanyingi Investment Forum. Total programme investment exceeded UGX 1 billion. The pilot provides strong evidence for scaling integrated, community-led malaria elimination across Iganga District and the wider Busoga Region. It also demonstrated the value of school-based interventions.
